A Barnsley environmental group has an interesting new project brewing - encouraging folk to grow their own hops.
The scheme from Voluntary Action Barnsley is part of a wider initiative to persuade communities to start growing their own food and share fruit trees and allotment space.
The group is to donate hop plants to community gardens so they can grow them and then sell the surplus, while processed plants will be given to individuals interested in brewing.
Spokesman Dan Wildsmith said: “Growing hops for brewing and herbal remedies was prolific in the past but is sadly much in decline these days.
“It is not just a great way of cutting the costs of brewing, it can also make you a bit of money by selling to a local microbrewery.”
