TV retail guru Mary Portas has hailed Barnsley Market as the best she has ever visited.
As part of her mission from the Government to review the future of Britain’s High Streets, the ‘Queen of Shops’ visited Barnsley and was impressed by the popularity of its Sunday secondhand and specialist market.
With pitches available from £10 anyone can start a stall, something of which Portas approved. Speaking on Radio 4’s The Today programme, Portas said Barnsley’s was the ‘best market she had ever been to’.
Barnsley Council leader, Coun Steve Houghton, said: “We are delighted to get this national recognition from such a well respected retail expert.
“I hope this compliment will encourage more people to explore this area of retail.”
The visit was Portas’ second to South Yorkshire. She previously visited Rotherham, which she said should make more of its historic architecture.
