BAFTA win for Sheffield firm’s space age website

Staff at a Sheffield-based digital media company are over the moon after they picked up a BAFTA award for their work on the groundbreaking tv show ‘Live From Space’.

Rocket, based in Broomhall, took home the award for ‘Digital Creativity’ at the British Academy Television Craft Awards at The Brewery in London on April 26.

They won for their work with Arrow Media on the Channel 4 programme, which broadcast footage of the Earth live from the International Space Station (ISS).

Andy Barratt, Rocket’s managing director, said during his acceptance speech: “This is totally unexpected. To be recognised in this environment is overwhelming.”

He added: “Live from Space was an incredibly exciting project for us. We had the opportunity to flex our creative muscles and come up with a whole range of engaging content to work alongside the series.”

Rocket’s role involved developing the programme website, which included an astronaut test, a micro gravity game and an interactive documentary of Commander Chris Hadfield’s first ever space walk.

Over the three weeks the ‘Live From Space’ site was active, it pulled in more than 400,000 visits and 282,000 unique visitors.

Around 247,000 people used an online tracker to follow the ISS’ journey around the globe, while more than 100,000 visitors completed the astronaut test.

Scientists at space agency NASA were also impressed and recently awarded the team a ‘Group Achievement Award’.

The company also took home a gong at The Lovie Awards, which recognise the work of digital media agencies, and an award from the Royal Television Society Second Screen Awards, all for the same project.
