DEMONSTRATORS blocked a drilling rig in Chesterfield yesterday over plans to drill hundreds of wells in Lancashire.

The demonstrators from anti-fracking group, Frack Off, blockaded Cuadrilla Resource’s drilling rig in Danesmoor with four of them locking themselves to the site’s gate.

They said they wanted to prevent the rig from being moved to a drilling site in Lancashire, where they claim 800 wells are to be drilled.

Fracking is the extraction of gas from shale rock.

Demonstrator Elsie Walker, 27, said: “The scale of development proposed is being completely ignored. Cuadrilla wants to drill 800 wells in Lancashire alone.

“They are one company going after one type of gas.

“There are several companies going after several types of unconventional gas in the UK and all on a similar scale.

“If this goes ahead, we will witness the total industrialisation of the countryside.”
