Donna Beech works 90 hours a week and gets paid in kisses.
She doesn’t mind; husband Chris is the boss. And she’s helping him fulfil his dream of beating the supermarkets at their own game.
The couple, pictured above, have created their own inner city farm shop, Beeches of Walkley, and it’s just been short-listed for a national award.
It made it to the final 10 from over 900 nominations for Best Local Food Retailer in the Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards.
“A customer nominated us. We were absolutely astonished when the awards judges came to visit,” says Donna.
“Chris wanted a one-stop shop to make it easier for people to buy good Sheffield food, revitalise Walkley’s shopping community and help local producers,” says Donna.
“We sell local meat, fruit and veg, baking ingredients and deli foods.
“We are fighting back against the supermarkets.”
A butcher all his life – he started as a Saturday lad set on to make the burgers – Chris bought his shop in South Street, Walkley, two years ago and rose to local fame after inventing a recipe for the Sheffield Sausage.
He set his sights on growing an all-local mini mart and achieved it in June.
Says Donna: “He’s got me working all hours for very little reward. All I get are kisses, but it was his dream so how could I refuse?”
