SOUTH Yorkshire IT company JD Approach is hoping to follow in the footsteps of an American who managed to turn a red paper clip into a house through a series of ingenious swaps.
The Attercliffe Road company is planning to raise money for the Master Cutler Challenge by starting out with a computer mouse and has already persuaded Rotherham Titans Rugby Club to take the mouse in exchange for a rugby ball, signed by its players.
JD Approach director Deborah Adshead says the American who pioneered the idea made a series of swaps that gradually increased the value of the articles he was swapping.
Over time he worked his way up from the paper clip to the house with swaps involving a truck, a recording contract, a year's free rent in a house in Phoenix, Arizona, and a role in a movie.
At the end of the quest, Deborah and fellow director Jessica Zeun plan to auction whatever they end up with on eBay and donate the proceeds to the Master Cutler Challenge, which is raising money for St Luke's and Rotherham Hospices.
