The first phase of a multi-million-pound refurbishment of one of Sheffield's best-known hotels is about to get under way.
The Kenwood Hall Hotel – a Marriott Hotel until it was acquired by the Harrogate-based Principal-Hayley Group in December – started life as the family home of former Master Cutler George Wolsten-holme.
The Grade II Listed building has 114 bedroom
s, a leisure club and its own fishing lake.
Bedrooms are being refurbished and new bedrooms will be created in what are now hotel offices. The offices are being relocated to the hotel's gate house.
Public meeting rooms are being upgraded and the Old House, which is extremely popular with wedding parties and dates back to the early 19th century, will have its function rooms brought up to 21st century standards without losing their historic look and feel.
General manager Scott Whiting said: "Today's ann-ouncement marks a pivotal point in Kenwood Hall Hotel's long history.
"The Principal-Hayley Group are investing a significant amount in Kenwood Hall as they believe it has the potential to once again become one of South Yorkshire's most popular destination hotels.
"The renovation work we are undertaking will see us challenging our city centre rivals for local, regional and national business and conference trade.
"This period marks an incredibly exciting time for Kenwood Hall and a relatively short period of disruption will lead, we hope, to sizable long-term gains for us and the group."
Principal-Hayley's portfolio of properties includes The Royal York Hotel, in York; The Met, in Leeds; The Palace, in Manchester; Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club, near London; The George Hotel, in Edinburgh; and the Château de Saint Just in Paris, where the group is also opening a conference venue.
