Suggestions that employers may be compelled to pay for immigrant workers' English lessons have been attacked by Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce.
Government minister Hazel Blears recently told a House of Commons committee that legislation might be introduced unless firms that benefited from migrant labour were willing to make voluntary contributions towards tuition costs.
Chamber chief executive George Cowcher said: "Employers have had no choice but to use migrant labour to fill the skills shortages endemic throughout the UK, and in some cases ensure their workforce can speak sufficient English to do the job.
