Downs Surgical, the Chapeltown-based medical instrument manufacturer, has been named the fastest growing company in the Middle East by Arab Health World magazine.
The 120-year-old company, whose products carry the Made in Sheffield mark of excellence, has trebled sales to Libya a year after entering the market and boosted sales to the Gulf States by 75 per cent.

Downs' international business manager Steve S
purgin said: "Profit for Downs across the Middle East is well above what we predicted and this is essentially due to a committed approach to becoming firmly established in the Gulf States.

"This significant sales growth across the Middle East has seen demand for all of Downs' key surgical products, but with an emphasis on sales of our ear, nose and throat surgical equipment.

"Downs has worked at creating a strong presence in Libya. This is a relatively new market but one with massive potential and we have two dedicated sales managers stationed in Egypt who are key to developing the market across 13 countries in the Middle East.

"After years of inactivity we have also seen massive sales growth in Saudi Arabia. We are looking at potential tenders of six or seven figures into 2008 and beyond."

Thorncliffe Park-based Downs Surgical supplies instruments used in everything from general surgery to ENT surgery, from cardio vascular instrumentation to obstetrics and gynaecology.

The company also makes and distributes total hip replacement systems for both trauma and elective surgery.
