HANGING baskets are always popular and we've come a long way from the traditional summer creations of trailing geraniums, nepeta and lobelia - nothing wrong with these, I hasten to add.
I well remember when winter baskets of dwarf bulbs, pansies etc was practically unheard of.

May I strongly urge you, space permitting, to extend the concept to include herbs, fruit, salad and vegetables.

Salad leaves, radish, spring onions, round forms of carrot and beetroot, all do well and can provide summer-long tasty salads. For tomatoes, give them a basket to themselves - you'll be well rewarded. Tumbler is still the number one variety. Chives, mint, coriander and parsley, make ideal herb subjects and will give fragrance as a bonus.

On a permanent basis, I suggest three years, a strawberry filled basket will give a summer treat to reward your efforts. Yes you've earned it! The main tasks are regular watering/liquid feeding.
