PLANS to invest £200,000 in Rotherham as part of a initiative to boost Britain’s high streets have been welcomed by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.
The town is among 15 new ‘Portas Pilot’ areas across the UK which will benefit from funding.
Local Government Minister Grant Shapps has announced that Rotherham will be given £100,000 by the Government, which will be matched by a similar sum from Meadowhall’s part owner, British Land.
Chamber executive director Andrew Denniff said: “This is a welcome investment in Rotherham town centre and, with the matched funding from British Land and the potential to link any expenditure into local businesses within the regional economy, there is an excellent opportunity to enhance the value of the initial spend.
“It is important that, whatever projects are undertaken under the scheme, we try to maximise the benefits for our local businesses.”
