The site of a former school is set to be transformed into a £10 million shopping centre.

Family firm Rothstone Estates says 80 jobs will be created and 39 new homes built if plans for the old Foulstone School in Darfield, Barnsley, are given the go-ahead.

Big-name supermarkets Sainsbury’s and Lidl have already agreed terms on the Nanny Marr Road site ahead of the application being submitted to Barnsley Council.

The development will also include a 180-space car park and a mix of two and three-bedroom houses. A number of public consultation sessions to give residents the chance to view the plans are being held in Darfield this month.

Mark Rothery, managing director of Rothstone Estates, said: “This would provide a much needed boost to local retail facilities as well as a significant number of jobs. Currently, Darfield residents have limited choice, so many people have to travel out of the village to shop.

“The scheme would provide access to shops which meet the needs of the local community.”
