IRELAND boxer Darren Sutherland is an Olympic success with strong links to Sheffield.
The young Dubliner, winner of a bronze in the Beijing ring yesterday, was brought over to England by boxing trainer Brendan Ingle as a teenager.

He developed as a fighter under Ingle's wing at his Wincobank gym.

"He won three or four junior nat
ional titles with us," Ingle recalled. "He'll be a better pro than he is amateur, should go on to win European and World titles."

Sutherland, who is now 26, is a former pupil at Sheffield's High Storrs. He gained two A levels there.

He was beaten in yesterday's Olympic middleweight semi final by England's James Degale.

Two years ago Sutherland's promising career seemed over following a double fracture of his left eye socket.
