SHEFFIELD United winger David Cotterill is expected to hold talks with Swansea City after the two clubs agreed a fee for the Wales international, The Star can reveal.
Cotterill, who has struggled to command a regular place in Kevin Blackwell's starting 11 this season, has been granted permission to speak to officials at the Liberty Stadium after being deemed surplus to requirements.

Huw Jenkins, Swansea's chairman, suggested last night that he is hopeful of securing the 21-year-old's signature before next week's deadline for loan signings.

Should the move be completed then Cotterill's transfer will be made permanent during the January transfer window.

"We are getting closer," Jenkins said. "We are certainly closer than we were last week although nothing has been finalised yet.

"There's no desperate rush.

"We are just looking to bring in one or two players to strengthen the squad for the remainder of the season."

Although Jenkins refuted claims that Cotterill's price tag has been finalised, sources in the principality claim that a figure of around £500,000 has been discussed.

If that proves to be correct, then it will represent a significant loss on the estimated £1m United paid Wigan Athletic for Cotterill 16 months ago.

Cotterill, who initially arrived on loan during Bryan Robson's reign, made an instant impression in South Yorkshire and a series of incisive displays persuaded Blackwell to offer him a long-term contract after succeeding the former England captain at the helm.

However, despite the initial excitement at capturing a player regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the Football League, Cotterill failed to establish himself.

With centre-half Matthew Kilgallon also destined for the exit door, Blackwell is likely to embark on a major recruitment drive in the New Year.

Wales, including Cotterill's Bramall Lane team mate Ched Evans, tasted defeat for the first time in Euro 2011 qualifying competition when they lost 2-1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina yesterday.

Wow! We know how to cut a deal! How about we give him to Swansea for nothing and let them kick us in the nuts for good measure!! A great young player who doesnt get the chance and (as the rest of the players) can't seem to settle in to Blackwell's tactics (or lack of them)!

Unbelievable that Blackwell can even think of selling creative players in the middle of what most fans see as the most disappointing season for ages. With a bit more encouragement, faith and guidance, Cotts could have ripped this leagues defences apart on a weekly basis.
Instead of selling forwards, he ought to be buying defenders, and has missed a real trick by not moving for Woods just up the road, a ready made replacement for Killa who will be of in Jan.
This man couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag, let alone a crisis (a self made one I might add).

Sums our club up, sell anything young and talented (Naughton, Walker, Cotts) and replace them with aging has beens (Cresswell). Isn't that what the reprofiling is all about, sell Cotts and buy Cresswell? Where are the significant funds for investment? What about our injury crisis Blackwell is so fond of going on about? its so bad we can afford to sell fit players is it? Something is seriously wrong down at the Lane and can somebody tell James Shield to stop going on about play off challenges, is he the only person who doesn't realise we are in a relegation battle?

where Cotteril has got some talent, he flatters to deceive, his inability to know when to put in a cross and when to take on a man is his major short coming, (which is pretty much the biggy being a winger)

he reminded me of Ndlovu, exciting and frustrating at the same time, too many times he attempt to take on the left back 4 or 5 times, instead of getting past him and swinging in a cross, as for not being given a chance at the club

2004–2006 Bristol City 62 (8)
2006–2008 Wigan Athletic 18 (1)
2008? Sheffield United (loan) 16 (0)
2008– Sheffield United 38 (6)

so in 16months he's played 54 (+6sub) times, so hardly not been given a chance, I would be sad to see him go as I think with time he will develop, but given the current situation time is something we currently dont have!

what a joke - lets flog another 21yr old and keep 46 yr old glen little! cotts must have set up 90% of beatties goals and the reason he delays on the ball is that he hasnt got anyone in the middle who can put the ball in the net (hendos relish last min against newcastle - i rest my case) utd will stay down with pigs if blackwell stays and accepts mccabes money "balancing" BAD TIMES!!!!

Bad business yet again. Lets hear Blackwell bleat about the injuries again after Saturday when we scramble for a point. Sorry to sound so negative but he is now exposed as a manager who has no direction, no strategy and no tactical know how. Personally I am back to where I was during the dark period under Robson and not looking forward to the game on Saturday. I feel that we have been conned into forking out for season tickets as there is absolutely no sign of ambition. Killa knows it thats why he is off. Things will have to change dramatically if I am to bother next year. Who care about other clubs in China or elsewhere, WE WANT PERFORMANCES AT BRAMHALL LANE!!!

Yet another brilliant move by Blackwell. Spent months trying to get him on a permanent deal, then doesn't play him.
BLACKWELL OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
