Danny Webber netted twice in the opening 10 minutes as Kevin Blackwell's side were given a tough test by sister team Ferencvaros.
Around 4,000 fans - including the vociferous travelling support - were inside the Florian Albert Stadium and they were treated to an entertaining and competitive encounter.
Ferencvaros, managed by former Blades striker Bobby Davison, start their Hungarian season on the same day that United kick-off the Champion-ship campaign at Birmingham City. They are at the same stage as Blackwell's side in terms of pre-season fitness.
United made all the early running and Webber, starting in attack alongside Jon Stead, with James Beattie in Sheffield receiving treatment for a calf problem, took advantage.
Just back from a six-month lay-off with a knee complaint, Webber took just 75 seconds to open the scoring.
A fortuitous ricochet off the referee allowed the striker to round trialist goalkeeper, Jan Michael-Williams, before slotting through the legs of Sekou Tidiane Souare, who was attempting to guard the goal.
Webber grabbed his and United's second after suspect defending allowed him to beat the keeper again, this time with the aid of the crossbar.
The home side, who included former Blades Paul Shaw and James Ashmore, as well as loanee Liban Abdi, pulled a goal back before the half-hour mark – Zoltan Csiszar beating Paddy Kenny with a bullet header.
Both sides made numerous changes for the second half.
After Lee Hendrie's side-footer was parried by substitute goalkeeper Adam Holczer, Billy Sharp netted the rebound to make it 3-1 but within 60 seconds, the home side had netted once more, Mohamad Lamine giving Kenny no chance with a long-range shot.
Blades: Kenny, Naysmith (Armstrong 45), Morgan, Stead, Webber (Sharp 45), Hendrie, Speed (Quinn 45), Tonge (Montgomery 45), Gillespie (Naughton 68), Geary (Halford 45), Ehiogu (Kilgallon 45). Subs not used: Bennett, Hulse, Sun, Carney. Goals: Webber (2, 10), Sharp (80).
Meanwhile, Blackwell is being linked with a move for Oldham's 19-year-old forward Deane Smalley, who has come through the ranks at John Sheridan's club.
