SHEFFIELD United have sold Michael Tonge to Stoke for £2m and loaned Jon Stead to Championship rivals Ipswich until January – 20 months after buying him for £750,000.
Tonge, 25, has penned a four-year contract at the Britannia Stadium.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis said: "I am delighted to have signed a player like Michael.
"I have been a long time admirer of him and he will bring a lot to our squad.
"He can play in a number of positions which is important and he will add some balance to the squad."
Meanwhile, Ipswich have also agreed a fee with the Blades for the 25-year-old Stead should the loan move become permanent.
The former England Under-21 international started his career at Huddersfield and scored 22 goals in 68 games before a Premier League move.
Blackburn Rovers signed the 6ft 3ins striker for £1.25m in 2004 but he scored just eight times in 42 appearances before moving on to Sunderland and then Sheffield United.
Stead spent 18 months at the Stadium of Light, before switching to Bramall Lane in a £750,000 deal in January 2007.
He scored five goals in 14 appearances for the Blades that season.
United now have James Beattie back from injury.
