SHEFFIELD United's Ian Bennett appears to have escaped serious injury after suffering a thumb problem at Barnsley earlier this week.
But while The Star understands that preliminary tests on the goalkeeper showed there were no broken bones, team mates Matthew Kilgallon and Andrew Davies face an anxious wait to discover whether they have become the latest victims of Bramall Lane's crippling injury crisis.

Like Bennett, Kilgallon was withdrawn midway through Monday's hard-fought draw at Oakwell.

Fellow defender Davies soldiered on despite receiving a heavy blow to a knee .

United manager Kevin Blackwell refused to elaborate on the players' conditions, instead revealing that doctors will perform further examinations shortly.

"Benno has had an x-ray and now we've got to see how they interpret it," Blackwell said.

"Davies is going to have an MRI scan which should tell us exactly what is wrong.

"Killa has not had anything done yet because the swelling around the ankle is too great.

"We've got to wait for that to go down before anyone takes a look.

"The normal procedure is that he'll have a scan within 48 hours of the incident."

Although Bennett's diagnosis might yet be reversed, news that he could be declared available for selection when Peterborough visit Bramall Lane next weekend will be welcomed by Blackwell, who only has one other 'keeper - Mark Bunn - on his roster after allowing Justin Haber to join sister club Ferencvaros on loan.

United had planned to take part in a exhibition game in Syria during the international break but are now expected to concentrate on treating the walking wounded at their Shirecliffe training complex.

Speaking immediately after Bennett was withdrawn, Blackwell said: "We put a ball in his hand during the interval and he just couldn't grip it properly.

"We're not sure exactly what is wrong or how long he will be out."

Meanwhile, United's reserve team fixture against Derby County this afternoon has been moved from Sheffield FC to Bramall Lane. (2pm).

Bennett had a fantastic first half at Barnsley before the injury and should be given a run in the team now. Bunn has been poor and should be sent back to Blackburn when his loan agreement ends. I really question some of Blackwell's signings. They were so lucky at Barnsley having only the two shots from penalties on target the whole game. Good job the ref was on our side and Barnsley missed a hatful of chances. How long before Blackwell goes?

we had a fair few chances that were off target though, and I am sure we actually had a few more than that on Target too, (Skysports actually said there had been 26 attempts on goal my the 90th minute)

and just checked skysports score centre and they have Barnsley with 10 on target and 9 off target, and us with 5 on target and 5 off target, I do find it interesting that people (having obviously seen a negative statement about having two shots on goal) and automatically assumed it must be true!

We were very lucky against a far better team on Monday. But this is not due to bad signing's, this is due to the list of crocked players we have at the moment. Bunn i agree is really poor and does need to go back to Blackburn. But who does he bring in? Maybe give a lad from the acadamy a chance in the reserves before Bunn does go? Let us stop the calls for Blackie to go and get behind him and the lads. There is so much of the season left. Remember when Robson was let go? Blackie came in and did the job then. Come on Blades!!

From what I've read AB you had 8 in total with 3 on target. Barnsley had 17 with 8 of those on target!

even by yours 3 is one more than the 2 being reported here, but as I said according to Sky they figures are above (and as this was a Sky covered game I would think this was more accurate than anything (Blades 10 shots 5 on target and Barnsley 19 shots 10 on target)

while I admit Barnsley were better than us on the day, unfortunately its not always the best side that wins (having been both been better than Newcastle and losing we both know this!)
