WEMBLEY 1966, Leon 1970, Turin 1990 and Munich 2001; clashes between England and Germany are always spirited, dramatic affairs.
And now Bramall Lane is set to boast its own chapter in one of football's most compelling sagas after Sheffield United's stadium was confirmed as the venue for a veterans fixture between the two rivals early next month.
The game - part of ITV's Legends series being televised through the summer - takes place on Thursday August 7 and will help to raise money for the Chinese earthquake appeal.
England, managed by former Everton and Manchester City midfielder Peter Reid, will be looking for revenge after being beaten 4-2 in front of a 25,000 crowd at Reading two years ago.
"The current England Legends are a completely different team to the one that lost to Germany in 2006, and we will show that on August 7" Reid said.
"Since the defeat we've comfortably beaten a Rest of the World team and Scotland but we know the true test will come against Mattheus, Sammer, Freund and the likes.
"This is the only chance an England football team will get to put one over Germany this summer and we'll need every red-blooded English man and woman at Bramall Lane to cheer us on to victory."
United chairman Kevin McCabe added: "We are proud to host this event on behalf of the city and help raise funds for the victims of the earthquake appeal in Sichuan province where our club the Chengdu Blades are based."
Broadcast live on ITV4, the match marks the second game in a three-game series.
England kicked off their summer schedule with a 2-0 win over Scotland at St Mary's in May with Stan Collymore and Steve Hodge both writing their names on the scoresheet.
On September 18th, England and Ireland Legends meet at Fulham's Craven Cottage.
Tickets for the match are priced £10 adults and £5 for children/OAPs.
They are available at the Bramall Lane box office or by telephoning 0871 222 1889.
