KEITH Edwards has predicted that Derby County will be Sheffield United's main challengers for promotion next season.
The former United striker, who scored 171 goals in 293 starts for the Bramall Lane club, is confident that Kevin Blackwell's side will be "there or thereabouts" when the race for the Premiership draws to a close in May.

But, speaking ahead of Saturday's Championship curtainraiser at Birmingham City, Edwards told The Star: "I know they're not the favourites but, for me, Derby will be United's biggest threat.

"Their manager Paul Jewell has something about him and he's used to success.

"He's totally revamped the club after they were relegated last term and, to be fair, was probably planning for this the moment he was appointed.

"He never made any promises about keeping them up.

"Birmingham will be there or there abouts because they've got the money to spend, likewise QPR, but Reading, the other team to come down, haven't really brought anyone in and although I can't see them struggling, they might end-up around mid-table.

"But all of the teams who have come down have got used to losing games and that's why the whole division is going to be wide open.

"Derby have freshened things up so much though that it might not be as much of a problem for them."

Edwards, who returns to his role as an expert summariser for BBC Radio Sheffield at St Andrews, added: "I'm excited by the players Kevin Blackwell has brought in and he's shown himself to be a likable and effective manager.

"United will definitely be there or thereabouts and Blacky has been right to change things around during the summer.

"But it's absolutely imperative that we get off to a good positive start and keep winning our home games.

"We've got to look to nick things away and be stronger at home than we were last year.

"We lost five times at Bramall Lane and you can't do that and go up."

Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion have distanced themselves from reports linking them with a £2m bid for United midfielder Michael Tonge.

Chengdu Blades, Bramall Lane's sister club in the Far East, meet a United XI at Dronfield this evening (kick-off 7.45pm) while the tourists' fixture against Sheffield FC has been brought forward 24 hours to Friday.

most unpredictable league in the world, best league to watch no point trying to predict this league you could make a valid enough arguement for any team other than blackpool, donny and barnsley having a shot at top half finish/playoffs

the guy has his opinion, (and given that he's actually played the game at a top level!) probably does know a little more about the insides of a game that any of us, you have your opinion, I have mine, he has his,

I think wesps has the best point, this league is unpredictable! but where is the harm in adding a little conjecture,

Usual numpty comments from the fowls fans i see. Let's see where we all are come spring next year. The fowls will be struggling again whilst we will be in the play offs.

Westi and Wednesdaysurfgirls. Heres my opinion. The Blades will NOT be outside the top four this coming season whilst the poor relations at Swillsboro will be mid table AT BEST.And i guarantee two things. You wont finish higher than us and you wont beat us this season. Its not just another game under blackwell!! One other thing, for such a massive 'premiership club' why have you only sold HALF of the amount of season tickets we have??
They're here,
They're there,
Here and everywhere,
Empty seats...................

I won same bet last season, United will get promoted in top 2 i was told! I even changed it at Xmas, to play offs so he could try to win. Seriously!
United are too unpredictable, so before you try naming me and stating the same old tosh SheffieldBiggestClub, think about what I am saying!
Other points why are you getting yout tampon in a twist, typical Blade, you should have done interview with Edwards, another loads of garbage!
Edwards can have his say, but he is so one sided, never heard owt like it, apart from John Pearson maybe! The league is so unpredictable, not just Blunts. The teams that came down are strong, the teams such as QPR, Charlton and even Burnley will be ones who may cause a shock!
So SheffieldsBiggestClub, calm down, calm down and calm down a little more!
Good night and god bless!

Sheffields Biggest Club .... Whoever you are . i was only asking Mr James if it was a Vanilla or Chocolate shake that YOURE team would be involved with come the end of the season....Going on last seasons results i presumed a nice Vanilla Shake is much more likely than promotion to the premier league.. UP THE OWLS.
