PLAYER power proved to be the driving force behind Brian Howard's move to Sheffield United.
The Barnsley captain completed his protracted transfer to Bramall Lane last night when officials at Oakwell accepted their neighbours £500,000 offer for the 25-year-old.
United's neighbours had threatened to pull the plug on the deal, which sees Howard join Kevin Blackwell's side on loan before agreeing a permanent switch in January, despite granting permission for the former Southampton trainee to undergo a medical on Tuesday.
But, with Howard not only refusing to entertain another club's interest but reportedly willing to boycott training as well, it appears Barnsley were left with no options but to grant his request.
Howard's hardline stance is certain to guarantee him a good reception when he is unveiled to the home crowd ahead of tomorrow's Championship fixture with Bristol City.
"Sheffield United and Barnsley FC have agreed the loan transfer and eventual transfer of the registration of Brian Howard to Sheffield United," a terse statement on United's website said.
"Sheffield United ask for the understanding of both sets of fans after what have been difficult but cooperative negotiations and we have agreed that Barnsley FC will be responsible for publicising all details of the agreements."
With Howard's contract set to expire in the summer, United exploited the situation the secure a player recently valued at around £1.5 million for a fraction of his true value.
But relations between the two clubs have been soured.
Meanwhile Blackwell, who is due the reach a decision on the future of trialist Kiki Musampa shortly, has received calls about several fringe members of his squad.
Burnley are known to be monitoring Keith Gillespie's position at Bramall Lane.
