SHEFFIELD United and Sheffield Wednesday are working on a joint gesture to attract World Cup games to the city - using their first derby day of the 2009-10 season to showcase their partnership.
Both clubs are putting aside rivalries off the pitch to support the bid to bring the FIFA spectacular to the city in 2018 should England be awarded the tournament.

The Blades, who host the first Steel City derby on September 18, are in discussions with the Owls to make a specific gesture at the Sky-televised game before battle commences.

Details have yet to be made public. But a common approach towards persuading the FA to make Sheffield a host city is considered essential if the attempt is to be successful.

Yesterday was a key day in that general process.

WEDNESDAY'S ground-breaking sponsorship deal will help them to win more friends in America and boost their bid to clinch multi-million-pound investment.

Sheffield 2018 Bid Manager Wayne Coyle and Star Assistant Editor Bob Westerdale travelled to Wembley Stadium to hand-deliver the city's outline bid.

Coyle said: "It was a useful day, the initial feedback from the England 2018 organisation was favourable.

"I am also pleased how both of our football clubs have been excellent in the way they have shown their support. Now we need the public to show their commitment to Sheffield as their participation will be vital."

The best way to do that is log on to www.England2018bid.com and register, by selecting Sheffield as a preferred venue.

Sheffield Council Leader Coun Paul Scriven hopes the public get behind the bid.

"Sheffielders will feel so proud of their city and their country if we were to have the World Cup here in Sheffield," he said.

"It will be a great time for Sheffielders to come together for what would be a fabulous sporting event.

"Sheffield is a city that's passionate about football and as a bid team we are unified and committed to bringing the 2018 World Cup here. "

The next landmark for Sheffield in the bidding process is on Tuesday July 21.

That's when members of the official England 2018 Bid Team visit the city to inspect a number of sites.
