SHEFFIELD United will press ahead with their search for a creative midfielder after the departures of Michael Tonge and Jon Stead.
United manager Kevin Blackwell has repeatedly claimed he is happy with the options at his disposal.

But behind the scenes, Blackwell, who sanctioned the departures of Stead on loan, and Tonge, for a reported £2 million, before last night's deadline, has asked the club's scouting system to compile a list of candidates.

Blackwell's spies have focused the majority of their investigations abroad, where United believe they have a better chance of discovering a player who has slipped under the radar of Premier League clubs.

With teams in the Championship still able to complete loan deals, Blackwell can still enter the domestic market and could be forced to ignore his aversion to temporary deals following Tonge's sale to Stoke.

What do you think? Post your comments below.

"We want someone who is capable of splitting open a defence with one pass," a source told The Star.

"Someone who can shift the play at a moment's notice and who is equally as confident doing so to either side.

"There are one or two people under consideration but it's quite possible that we could still look elsewhere."

Having made an encouraging start to the new Championship campaign, Blackwell is keen to do business from a position of strength, while the return to fitness of striker James Beattie makes the prospect of acquiring an inventive schemer even more alluring.

Stead has initially joined Ipswich on loan until January.

However, United have already agreed a fee with their counterparts at Portman Road in anticipation of the switch being made permanent.

Bramall Lane's directors expected to learn the outcome of the recent Carlos Tevez Affair tribunal later this month.

Good piece of business letting Tonge go, he's blown hot & cold for a while now & needed a change. With Stead going as well this must open the way for others to step up in the near future..

I have to agree with the other comments and say this is a good piece of business for a player who hasnt had a good game for years !!
Like Brown, he was sensational a few seasons ago but we cant live on memories.
What i am a little worried about now though is 3 first team players have departed in the past week with no one coming the other way.Its almost like we're back to being a selling club again.Sign a quality foreign midfielder in the 5M bracket now.We can afford him surely if the desire to go back up does not want to remain just a dream !

I wish tonguey well at Stoke and Stead as well,I think Tongue just wasnt the same player as he was a couple of years ago,the money we got is good buisness now we have to invest that and more in one real quality midfield player.
As to Stead it was odvious he wasnt going to get many games here so I wasnt suprised to see him leave.

I think its a good thing for all concerned, Michael for me has not made any real progress in the last 2 or 3 years and we can remember that at one time his transfer would have commanded a fee of 3 or 4 million, however we should be even more urgently searching for an attacking midfield player who can split a defence.

Glad to see Tonge go, big thanks go with him but too many side ways passes for my liking.
How about Carney, Hendrie or Webber in the hole behind the forwards. All have good skills and a naturally attacking mentality.
Don't you just wish Blackwell would read these pages? Lets just consolidate now, give the lads a chance and only buy when the right player comes along.

Michael - good lick to you. I think its the best move for both you and the club. Thanks for all you've contributed.

I just hope Blackwell has got someone else lined up. If not, letting Tonge go (fisrt choice central midfield player) is irresponsible and suggests McCabe has lost the plot.

Can someone, anyone, give me an explanation why we haven't tried Gillespie as the midfield playmaker?

Good luck Tongey - you've been a great servant to the club.

David. Gillespie is a) getting on a bit, b) extremely right-footed (a winger) and c) injured!

I don't think this is too bad - we can afford to wait for the right player to come along. right wing - Cotters (at home) or Halford (a more defensive option away from home), left we have Carney, Hendrie (when his foot clears up) and Quinn, and in the middle, Speed can hold, with Webber or Quinn to attack and run onto balls from behind, or Monty can get in there and do a job for us.
