WEDNESDAY could face a former Sheffield United and Barnsley striker when they play Haarlem tonight.
He is Laurens Ten Heuvel, who had spells at Bramall Lane, Oakwell, Northampton, Bradford and Grimsby.

The 6ft 2in centre-forward has just joined Haarlem from Roosendaal and was on loan last season at Stormvogels Telstar - who will be the Owls' second and final opponents of their Holland stay, on Thursday.

Ten Heuvel cost Barnsley a fee of £75,000 when they signed him from Den Bosch in 1996.

He made few appearances in two years with the Reds and had a loan stay at Northampton before going back to Dutch football, joining Telstar in 2001.

United signed him the following summer, but once again his career in South Yorkshire failed to take off and, after loans with Grimsby and Bradford, he returned o his home country in 2003.

It will be the 32-year-old's second spell with Haarlem - he was with them for two years from 2004.

Haarlem, who play in the Dutch equivalent of the Championship, include
Ruud Gullit, Johnny Metgod and Johnny Rep among their former players and used to be managed by Dick Advocaat.

Gullit helped them to qualify for the UEFA Cup in 1982.

They have won their domestic title once and the cup three times but were relegated to the second level of Dutch football - the Eerste Divisie - in 1990 and have been there ever since. They were 20th last season.

Haarlem are expected to adopt a typical brand of Dutch possession football.

Owls boss Brian Laws is set to use these opening two matches of the pre-season programme primarily as a fitness exercise, making full use of his squad.

Both friendlies are being played in Heiloo. The Owls face Telstar on Thursday. and return home on Friday.

Meanwhile, Laws has thanked everyone who sponsored him for his parachute jump in aid of Sheffield Children's Hospital.

He has raised around £5,000 from family, friends, Owls employees and other well-wishers.

The Owls are running courses for youngsters during the summer holidays, at Middlewood and Tideswell. For details, phone 0114 221 2215.
