SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell plans to make one more major signing this summer after capturing Greg Halford and Sun Jihai.
Halford, who has arrived from Sunderland on a season-long loan and Jihai, a free transfer following his release by Manchester City, will meet their new teammates for the first time this morning after formally agreeing terms at Bramall Lane yesterday.

Blackwell told The Star that a winger is now his number one target.

"We've got two players at opposite ends of the spectrum," Blackwell, who also offered goalkeeper Ian Bennett a one-year deal on Monday, said.

"Greg is a young lad but he's already shown that he's a proven performer at this level and he'll be a valuable acquisition. He's versatile and he'll give Derek Geary extra competition at right-back but he can push on if required.

"Sun Jihai is vastly experienced and, importantly for me, he's played in this country for the last nine or so years and knows what it's all about.

"I'm well aware that the club have brought in Chinese players in the past who, for one reason or another, haven't been able to handle the demands of the English game.

"That's not the case with Sun Jihai because he's appeared consistently and at Premier League level under a variety of different managers.

"I've spoken to all of them and they all rate him highly; especially in that holding midfield role.

"One of them told me that if he was working in the Championship he'd sign him straight away, so that tells you everything."

With sources at the Stadium of Light indicating last night that there is no substance to reports linking United's James Beattie with a move to Wearside, Blackwell will now turn his attention to recruiting a winger capable of providing the former England striker with the ammunition to continue his exploits in front of goal.

Wigan's David Cotterill, who spent three months on loan at United last season, is scheduled to hold further talks with Blackwell over the weekend while another ex-loanee, Manchester United's Lee Martin, has made no secret of his desire to return.

Blackwell added: If I can't get the wide man that I want then I won't panic because I'm already well-stocked with quality.

"Stephen Quinn did terrifically well towards the end (of last season) and Greg can slot in there too."

Can someone please offer an explanation as to why it says "Kevin Blackwell plans to make one more major signing"......by saying "one more" it implies that some have already been made....to my knowledge we've signed ANOTHER waste of space Chinese player that is no better than what we have already got! and a "versatile" player who has had 4 clubs in 3 seasons and hasn't performed consistently for 2 years.......hardly "major" are they?

Blackwell had previously stated that he wouldn't sign players for the sake of it, and was only interested in signing players that would improve on what we had.

We already have a right back better than Halford and we already have 2 left backs and 2 holding midfield players better than Sun Jihai.....so wheres the improvement?

We're going to miss the boat on Cotterill, the only player the fans really want us to sign, and instead end up with Lee Martin, a guy who spent 5 months on loan and was injured for 3 of them.....

Overall its fair to say Im bitterly disappointed with things so far. Still KB will have my 100% backing, but its not the start I was hoping for.

Halford will prove to be a brilliant signing greg, i, like you am not sure about sun jihai, as our last two chinese signings have been nothing but a clothes rack.

If we keep beattie for the duration the amount of goals that will come from halford`s outragous throw in will be nobody`s business, remember charlton at the lane last season.

Chin up son

Sun Jihai, on a free is good signing, Prem quality/good engine. Halford on a loan deal is decent - he's cost Reading & Sunderland megabucks & failed at highest level so needs to prove himself. Don't forget that there isn't a lot of £'s going around & everyone is belt tightening - look & Hasselbank/Crdiff situation!. Need to offload 1 or 2 & get a winger in for the right money.

Come on guys..............
Its like the Wendys page on here, moaning about their long overdue takeover which will never happen........
Both of these signings will be good for the squad, if not for an immediate starting place. We do need those wingers as was proven with both Cotterill and Martin.Personally i would sign both.....
I think we will definitely be up there with the best of them if we can get the 'old' Rob Hulse back and can keep hold of Beattie. UP THE BLADES !!!
