Huddersfield Town 2 v Sheffield United 1:

MANAGER Kevin Blackwell declared himself satisfied with Sheffield United's pre-season campaign despite seeing Keigan Parker stain their previously unblemished record.
The Huddersfield Town substitute pounced during the closing stages of Saturday's game to inflict the first defeat of the summer on United.

"To be fair this was a match I could have done without and I think Huddersfield were the same," Blackwell said.

"We've had such a good warm-up that my main concern was not to see anybody get hurt. Thankfully there's nothing to report and now we can concentrate on getting ready (for Birmingham)."

'I'll spring into action' says Blades' new signing

With the Championship's curtain-call now just five days away, this match bore all the hallmarks of a final dress rehearsal. Blackwell's team selection also reflected the delicate balancing act managers must perform during the final stages of their preparations for a new campaign.

Nine of the players who started at The Galpharm Stadium are likely to feature in United's first choice eleven at St Andrews.

But Darius Henderson and Danny Webber, who seemed favourites to spearhead the attack in James Beattie's absence, were both ommitted from the squad altogether.

Against Huddersfield, that task fell to Danny Webber and Jon Stead but it was Gary Speed who opened the scoring after 22 minutes when he headed home Greg Halford's long throw.

Huddersfield deserved their equaliser seven minutes later.

United's defence failed to deal with Mike Flynn's header and former United striker Danny Cadamarteri coolly slipped the ball beneath a helpless keeper Paddy Kenny.

Although a spat between Halford and Jim Goodwin, which saw the Huddersfield midfielder withdrawn, injected some needle into proceedings after the break but a flurry of substitutions removed any remaining sting from an interesting rather than absorbing afternoon. Matthew Spring made his first appearance in a United jersey.
