MATTHEW Spring has vowed to repay Sheffield United for resurrecting his Champion-ship career by propelling the club towards promotion.
Spring, who last week became Kevin Blackwell's sixth close-season signing when he agreed a long-term loan from Luton Town, was facing the unenviable prospect of battle for League Two survival before reviving his partnership with the United manager.

Blackwell, who has previously worked with the 28-year-old at Leeds and Kenilworth Road, believes Spring will emerge as a driving force behind Bramall Lane's push for the Premier League.

Blackwell happy to avoid injuries: MATCH REPORT AND SLIDESHOW

After making his United debut as a second-half substitute at Huddersfield on Saturday, Spring told The Star: "My main aim is simple - to score goals and plenty of them.

"That and getting us up of course.

"There's no doubt we can do it and that we should be aiming as high as we can; not just to get into the play-offs.

"My future is still a bit up in the air because I'm here only on a temporary basis.

"Hopefully if I do well then that won't be the case and we can get something sorted."

Blackwell dismissed his team's 2-1 defeat at The Galpharm Stadium as a temporary blip, and his priority this week is to prepare United for their televised fixture at Birmingham City in five days time.

But he could find his preparations for the trip to St Andrews overshadowed by reports that West Bromwich Albion are preparing a £2 million bid for Michael Tonge.

The former England under-21 international, one of United's youth system's most successful graduates, is understood to have attracted interest from Wigan Athletic earlier this summer with officials at the JJB Stadium believed to have been ready to offer cash plus players in return for his signature.

However, Blackwell is more concerned with strengthening rather than dismantling his squad at such a critical stage and has again refused to rule out more new arrivals.

Tonge needs fresh challenge & should go for right money, we have plenty of midfielders & he's over-rated, often failing to produce when he's needed.

Tongey is a great player on his day. He has yet to make it as a legend. In fairness, he has probably peeked with the Blades now. Might be worth while thinking of cashing in on him now.

I would definitely cash in and sell Tongue. He had a shocking last season and a move would probably do him good too besides giving the blades some more cash for new signings.

I have to agree. Tonge is not what we need now. He goes side ways far too much and doesn't have the vision to thread those balls through for the forwards. Webbers, Stead or the new guy Spring can do a much better job in the hole behing the strikers. Tonge takes too long to make a decision. The opposition get more men behind the ball and the advantage is lost. 2 million would be good business.

I agree 2million would be good business but can't help thinking that tongue had a good end to the season under blacky and maybe this season he could return to the highs of a few years back

He may have had a good end to the season under Blacky. But to be fair he should be able to perform like that week in and week out under any manager. He has been a revalation with what he has done, but now may be the time for him to go and try his luck elsewhere. Dont get me wrong. I am a big fan of his, but feel that he lost his game when Brown went.

Totally agree.Im a big fan of his and will always remember the season when Tonge forged that great partnership with Brown, but apart from brief periods in the odd game he has never re-captured that form.If we can get 2 mill for him then give him all our best wishes and let him go somewhere else who may coax that bit of magic out of him on a permanent basis.
