SHEFFIELD folk spend five hours a year talking nonsense, according to new research.
A BT study shows Sheffield residents spend nearly 50 hours a year on the phone - but 10 per cent of it is wasted on 'filler' words like "basically", "um", "err", "actually", "at the end of the day" or "you know".
Speech and psychological expert Phillip Hodson said: "Britain clearly loves to talk but many of us need to re-learn the art of conversation.
"Some say fillers are a sign of intellect, used to consider what to say next."
