DETECTIVES are trying to solve the mystery of how a letter from the wife of Britain's greatest Prime Minister turned up during a South Yorkshire drug bust.
The letter from Clementine, wife of wartime leader Winston Churchill, is suspected to be stolen property and police are keen to hand it back to the rightful owner.
It is a signed acknowledgement from Mrs Churchill, who was often filmed at the side
of her husband when he toured Britain's bombed cities during the Blitz, for donations to a charity she was patron of during the Second World War.
The letter is a thank you for several donations made to the Aid for Russia fund between 1942 and 1944 when the Red Army was involved in a bitter struggle with the Germans on the Eastern Front.
"We have no idea how it has come to be in Mexborough," said PC Steve Roberts, of Doncaster CID.
The handwritten letter and some of the original cheques sent as donations have been mounted on an A4-sized piece of card which was found when police raided a house in Coniston Road, Mexborough, on July 29.
"It was quite obvious it didn't belong in the house where we found it and the occupier had not purchased it.
"It may be a family heirloom or acquired by a collector."
Anyone with information should contact PC Roberts at Doncaster Police Station on 01302 385199.
n A woman is currently on police bail on suspicion of possessing class A drugs seized at the property.
