TAUNTS by cruel yobs have made a disabled South Yorkshire woman's life such a misery she has twice attempted suicide, she claimed today.
Wendy Crossland, who is confined to a wheelchair, and her blind husband Lee say they have been subjected to threats, abuse and intimidation ever since they moved to Armyne Grove, Cundy Cross, Barnsley, five years ago.

Problems started for Lee, now aged 38, and Wendy, 58, within the first few days with people screaming abuse through their letterbox and items being hurled at their windows. Lee, who alleges he has been assaulted on several occasions, said: "It was bad right from the beginning and it has just escalated.

"They play loud music non-stop, rev up car engines outside our front door and, if they see me venturing out with my white stick, follow me then trip me up."

Wendy, who said they had endured unbearable abuse, added: "It has been awful, I have twice tried to take my own life."

Lee added: "They threw a mattress and stinking items over the wall and, on another day someone threw a pram at our front window.

"It's so bad we daren't got out because they just shout at us. We only leave when the Dial-a-Ride bus can pick us up."

The couple say their pleas to be rehoused have fallen on deaf ears with landlord Chevin Housing Association.

Lee said: "They gave us daily diary sheets to fill in and we have faithfully done that, but we are still stuck here and it's driving us to despair."

Paul Hayes, director of housing services at Chevin Housing Association, said: "Mr and Mrs Crossland have reported that they are experiencing anti-social behaviour and the police are also involved in helping resolve this case.

"We have offered to install CCTV to help gather evidence but I understand that Mr and Mrs Crossland were not keen on this happening. They have requested a transfer to another of our housing schemes but they require an adapted dwelling of which none are available at the moment."

A Barnsley police spokesman said: "We are investigating these allegations."
