IT MAY not be the hottest summer - but that hasn't stopped the sun shining on Barnsley's little bloomers.
Eight local schools have taken up the challenge to raise money for Barnsley Animal Rescue, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Barnsley Hospice through a sponsored sunflower growathon.

The growathon, organised by The Mall Alhambra, has seen pupils working together to raise money and win prizes for the tallest sunflower, as well as prizes for the most attractive bloom and the school which raises the most money.

Kids from Athersley North, Birkwood, Greenfield, Shafton, Darfield Valley, St Helen's and Lacewood Primaries have been nurturing their sunflowers since the beginning of May and they are currently on display on The Mall's Gallery level.

Mallcolm, the Mall monster, is carefully looking after them and watering them each day.

Alhambra general manager Mark Broadhead said: "We are delighted to be working with local schools to raise money for such worthy causes.

"Barnsley Animal Rescue and Yorkshire Air Ambulance are the chosen beneficiaries of this year's Mall Cares programme and we are always happy to support the Barnsley Hospice because of the fantastic work it does within the local community."
