BARNSLEY Council is to spend £20,000 on a feasibility study looking into providing new gypsy sites across the borough.
Plans for new caravan pitches will be discussed at a meeting of the council's Cabinet tomorrow.

The idea is to create six to 10 new pitches at the existing Smithies site as well as looking at creating new gipsy camps elsewhere in the borough.

T
here are currently 28 council-owned pitches and 14 private pitches in Barnsley - a shortfall of 25 council-owned pitches and 13 private pitches.

Consultation with travellers found the preferred area for a new council-owned pitch would be in the south or west of the town, and there is also a desire for a smaller, privately-owned site in the east of the borough.
