MORE than 20 former Bevin Boys are set to attend a civic reception hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley at the Town Hall on Friday.
The reception by Coun Ken Sanderson and Mrs Beryl Sanderson marks the 60th anniversary of the end of conscription for the mines.
Invitations have been sent to men, who are mostly now in their 80s, who worked in the borough's pits following the out
break of war.
As part of the reception, at 11.30am, each former Bevin Boy will be presented with a certificate by the Mayor.
Named after Ernest Bevin, then Minister of Labour and National Service, Bevin Boys were conscripted to work in Britain's mines between 1943 and 1948. Ten per cent of military conscripts were picked for the service.
