ELSECAR Heritage Centre in Barnsley is holding a Cornwall-inspired event this weekend, offering visitors a rare chance to view a 300-year-old mining engine used extensively in tin mines.
History lovers can see the Newcomen Beam Engine tomorrow and Sunday. The 'scheduled ancient monument' was invented by West Country ironmonger Thomas Newcomen to drain water from the depths of Cornish tin mines.

Hundreds were then put to use across the UK and as far a field as America. Today, the last surviving Newcomen in its original position is at Elsecar.
