BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey admits he has sympathy for dropped keeper Luke Steele.
The Oakwell chief brought back Heinz Muller for Saturday's game at Southampton and also axed striker Jon Macken.
Steele and Macken had not missed a match until the weekend.
"It was something that I felt I had to change, that's no detriment to L
uke, he has played really well and he can feel hard done by; Jon too," Davey declared.
Barnsley changed personnel and shape to take on Southampton at St Mary's and gained their first point on the road in a 0-0 draw.
Said Davey: "I had them watched two or three times. They're a good side but have just not been getting results. But for a missed chance right at the end we would have won the game.
"We've got a point and it's something to build on."
Iain Hume fluffed an open goal, having beaten keeper Kelvin Davis.
Davey brought back Anderson de Silva for his first game in seven months and played him in central midfield alongside Brian Howard and in front of Hugo Colace.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce was on the right with Hume on the left and Kayode Odejayi was the main centre forward.
Davey reported no further injury problems after training yesterday.
He could have on-loan striker Maceo Rigters back available for Saturday's game with Norwich at Oakwell.
n Colchester assistant-boss Kit Symons has taken the role of caretaker-manager in the wake of Geraint Williams' departure - and has thrown his hat into the ring for the full-time role.
Former Crystal Palace and Portsmouth defender Symons and Reserves boss Joe Dunne will be in charge when the Us travel to Tranmere on Friday .
"Being a manager is something I have always wanted to do. I had a spell at Palace when I was in charge there and I really enjoyed it," Symons said.
"It certainly wasn't on my agenda when I came here as Geraint's assistant, because he was someone I knew, liked and respected and I have enjoyed working alongside him.
"The results have been disappointing and we have all been frustrated by them, but this is an opportunity for myself and one I aim to take."
Williams left Colchester by mutual consent after a disappointing start to the season, culminating in their 3-0 home defeat by MK Dons.
nPort Vale have dismissed manager Lee Sinnot.
The League Two outfit have lost their last four games in all competitions and have won just two of their nine matches so far this term.
