Barnsley 11 off the pace

DESPITE a magnificent century from Simon Widdup, Barnsley fell 11 runs short when facing a formidable York total in their Yorkshire League Cup semi-final at York yesterday.
The home side had amassed 274-9 in their 50 overs with openers Duncan Snell,79, and Dan Wilson, 49, putting on 108 before Simon Mason added 73.

Widdup's great effort kept Barnsley in with a chance and but for him they would have been well beaten.
He made 143 off 151 balls with 15 fours and 2 sixes.

Best support came from Alex Morris with 28 and Widdup dominated several partnerships as Barnsley reached 263 with two balls left. Snell took 7-61. York entertain Castleford in the final next Sunday.

The home side made, Mason making 113 not out and Joe Ellis taking 4-33) and Barnsley replied with 209-7 (Dan Wood 39, Jason Booth 36, Mark Wilson 27, Simon Widdup 25).

The local derby went the way of Sheffield Collegiate at Bawtry Road.

Nick Gaywood's 79 enabled them to reach 180 and United ended on 146-9 with Neil Longhurst one short of his half-century.
