Yuri Matischen, managing director of Sheffield-based sport and leisure consultancy Montgomery Leisure Services, has been appointed regional chairman of the National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure.
Mr Matischen is responsible for some of the country's largest sporting events and is also chairman of the Sheffield Sharks basketball team.

He was involved in developing the regional business plan for the National Skills Academy and, as regional chairman, will be responsible for ensuring a single and coherent approach to education in sport and leisure is developed within Yorkshire and Humber.

Mr Matischen said: "In the next few months, we'll be recruiting staff, sourcing permanent offices and engaging with local employers. We will also be working closely with Sheffield United FC where the regional hub will be located.

"It's never been a better time to get involved with the National Skills Academy. Employers of all sizes can become members and academic organisations can apply to have their training accredited. By the end of the year, there will be a major commitment to changing the way people access training in the sector.

"With the Olympics coming to England in 2012, it's the ideal opportunity to deliver a lasting legacy of skills for our region.
