NEW laws came into force on Wednesday which give householders a seven-day cooling off period for all doorstep sales.
The new regulations cover pre-arranged visits provided the transaction is more than £35. They also require doorstep sellers to inform customers of their cancellation rights in writing.
John Field, of Consumer Direct, said: "These new regulations c
lose a loophole and make the law simpler. If you buy things in your home, whether it was unexpected or pre-arranged, you have seven days to change your mind.
"If someone knocks at your door and doesn't give you these rights then the best advice is not to deal with them."
Last year Consumer Direct received 3,475 complaints from consumers in Yorkshire and the Humber about goods and services bought from doorstep sellers and more than 50,000 complaints nationally.
