SAVE our cobbles. Cobbled streets look lovely – see Paradise Square – and the old ones are a direct link with Sheffield of yesteryear.
That's why their dwindling number need protection.
Action Desk was dismayed to see this eyesore of a repair on George Street, off High Street, in the city centre.
The narrow road was included in works which saw cobbles installed on Fargate in th
e 1990s.
A COUNCIL spokesman said the road was dug up by Veolia to fix an emergency leak and a temporary surface had been laid.
He added: "Due to the specialist nature of the reinstatement of the cobbles Veolia will either pay Street Force or a specialist contractor to repair the highway on their behalf.
"The licence holder has six months to make a permanent reinstatement using the same materials.
"The council will ensure it is satisfactory and this will be enforced by a follow up inspection when we are notified that a permanent repair has been completed."
