PENSIONER Mike Fletcher was ticking along, just keeping body and soul together while forking out £150-a-quarter for gas, until Southern Electric increased the bill - by £3,310.
A mistake, obviously, but Mr Fletcher, aged 76, of Hadfield Street, Walkley, was alarmed. He failed to get any sense out of them.

ACTION

GOOD move Mike, Southern Electric has re-done its sums - and given him £407.

A Souther
n Electric spokesman said the miscalculation happened when he had a metric gas meter installed recently.

He added: "The measurement had changed from the old imperial four-figure reading to a new metric five-figure reading and the reading he provided contained an extra digit.

"We have now cancelled the bill and Mr Fletcher's account is now in credit. We are arranging for a meter-reading so that we can re-issue an entirely accurate bill."

Bet they dont pay him the credit - they'll retain it against future bills, no doubt (and earning interest on it).
