DEREK Dooley was a great man, who helped pull both sides of this great footballing city together.
It's a fantastic idea to have a statue built in his great memory. But I think MCCabe has jumped the gun and made a suggestion that will only please the 'red' half of the city. It's location at Bramall Lane would be ideal if Derek was only a 'United' man, but as he represents both sides of this footballing city a non-United site would preferably be better.

Many a 'blue' fan would feel deeply embarrassed to have to go to Blades-land to have to pay homage and respects to this great city hero. Derek deserves better than that.

A statue in the Peace Gardens, in the very 'Heart of the City' would be a far more fitting tribute to such a great (but humble) man.

From there Derek could watch over the thousands enjoying 'Sheffield-by-Sea' on a hot summer day.

IT would be most fitting to have a statue of Derek Dooley, a much-loved man, but please not at Bramall Lane. If SUFC want to place their own tribute there (and similarly SWFC one of their own at Hillsborough) all well and good. Surely, Derek was a man who belonged to the whole of the city and should, therefore, be honoured in the city centre, where everyone would would have access? How about the top of Fargate, Peace Gardens or the Winter Garden?

I'm a Blade, but I don't really think that there should only be a statue or other monument to Derek Dooley at just Bramall Lane, or just at Hillsborough.
The previous comments that it should be in the Peace Gardens are, in my opinion, totally spot on.
Derek wasn't just a Blade, he wasn't just an Owl. He was Sheffield football, and as such a statue should be accessible to all of Sheffield, and in the heart of the City, a fitting place for a man who loved this City.

Firstly, I would like give my condolences to Derek Dooley's family, friends and both sets of Sheffield football fans. Derek Dooley was legend and who was born and bred in Pitsmoor (Burngreave). As an Asian (Muslim), I have lived in the same area for over 38 years. During my teens I lived on the corner of Kilton Hill & Andover Street which was not far from Bramber Street (demolished in 1960s & other adjoining streets in the 1970s) which created open spaces & grass on which played football with other local lads including Trevor Matthewson and (went to Hillsborough to watch a England match) - after which I supported Wednesday. Trevor talked about his Uncle playing for United and his granddad for Wednesday. Unfortunately, our house was demolished around late 1976 and my parents moved to Roe Lane and I lost touch with the our five-a-side team-mates like Trevor, Allan, Leo, Mark and his brother Danny who lives at Roe Lane. In 1981, Trevor was signed by Wednesday and later played for Lincoln.

Pitsmoor/Burngreave has a proud history of having famous legends like Derek Dooley, John Fantham (England Footballer & local Cricketer), Joe Scarborough (Artist) and lesser known people like Trevor Matthewson. The image of the area has to reflect such positive role-models from the past, present and future - rather than the negative labelling of Pitsmoor that continues through the people in the media who form and shape opinions.
Finally, I think there needs to be a lasting tribute to Derek Dooley within the Pitsmoor/Burngreave area - what about re-naming Brunswick Road or Spital Street (we already have Spital Hill) to "Dooley Way" or the the Relief Road at "Bridgehouses" and the old Railway Bridge & the arch which leads to Brunswick Road to be named "Dooley Bridge". Hence, building bridges between United & Wednesday since 1974 and in recent times - the different BME communities that live in Burngreave and the rest of Sheffield as well.
